MAHA and King's landing Celebrate the season and akua Lonoikamakahiki

Kelii "Skippy" Ioane and a small group were trained in Lono ceremonies by Nalani Kanakaole on the island of Kahoolawe in 1980. They learned the protocols and ceremony for Lonoikamakahiki. They were asked to commit at least five years to the practice and were instructed to take Lono and the ceremony back to their communities. 

Lono was called on to begin the greening of the island of Kahoolawe after the military bombing of the island devastated its plant and sea life while also cracking its underground freshwater aquifer.

In 1984, Kelii "Skippy" Ioane brought Lono into the community of Keaukaha to begin the greening of the Hawaiian beneficiary. He held ceremony, fed the houseless, and played makahiki games. In 1985, he encouraged  MAHA and the King's Landing community to join him in the Makahiki celebrations. MAHA took on the responsibility of the kitchen to feed the community. Makahiki has been continuous for 37 years.

In 2005 Carol Ioane brought the Hawaiian Immersion Charter school Ka Umeke Kāʻeo, to participate in the opening ceremony of Makahiki.
